Local clubs in today’s FA Cup draw

The draw was made today for the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup (only 3 more rounds until Wycombe come in). There are some tough games for local sides & Flackwell Heath’s reward for winning tomorrow night’s replay will be a home game with Taunton Town. Meanwhile, Beaconsfield could entertain Havant & Waterlooville if they win tomorrow’s replay at Walton & Hersham. Draw:

Abbey Rangers v Marlow
Aylesbury United v Bishops Cleeve
Chertsey Town v Chesham United /
Uxbridge
Merstham v Thame United / Margate
Slough Town v Whitehawk
Beaconsfield Town /
Walton & Hersham v Havant & W’ville

Ties to be played Sep 18/19. Should Beaconsfield progress they will need to find a ground to stage their game as their pitch is being relaid.
If Flackwell progress it would be nice if their game was staged on Sunday Sep 19th as WW entertain Charlton Athletic on Sat 18th.

  • Half-time: Flackwell Heath 0 Weston-super-Mare 0. How this isn’t 3-0 or 4-0 to the visitors is down to the home keeper & some wayward finishing by the W-s-M strikers. About 300 here on a lovely balmy evening. Goal-less at half-time so there’s still hope for the underdogs yet!

Chesham are beating Uxbridge 2-1 & Thame are 1-3 down to Margate.

  • FT Thame United 2-4 Margate.

A good crowd of 237 were well and truly entertained in a more even match than it sounds. Margate took the lead twice and were 3-1 up at HT, with Jake Embery scoring his third soon after the break. All three of his goals were crackers, especially the second from 40 yards after he spotted the keeper off his line. The 22 year old striker has played for Herne Bay and Maidstone United, and is worth another look for his great finishing, although it looks as though he has had injury problems. He was subbed on 70 minutes with what looked like a knock.

Thame played very well, never gave up, and will regret missing three very good chances in the second half. As you might expect from a team one level up, Margate were more ruthless, bigger physically and with a touch more class than a very hard working Thame, although that didn't stop manager Westy having his usual moan!

The ground has been improved since my last visit, a new shelter at one end and high netting all the way around the perimeter.

Greg Hackett with the first Thame goal.

Second Thame goal from Ryan Blake.

  • FA Cup replay results:
    Chesham United 2 Uxbridge 1
    Flackwell Heath 0 Weston-super-Mare 1
    Thame United 2 Margate 4
    Walton & Hersham 2 Beaconsfield Town 5

So Flackwell & Thame are out but Beaconsfield have a great “home” draw (not at Beaconsfield) v Havant & Waterlooville while Chesham travel to Chertsey Town.

On a lovely evening for football a crowd of 267 saw Flackwell Heath given a football lesson by Weston-super-Mare, except in finishing. The gulf between the sides was too great to overcome as Weston created chance after chance after chance.

It took until the 84th minute for the visitors to take the lead, after which the home keeper took retribution by kicking the ball twice against a Weston player. He was booked but should have been red-carded. Disappointing as he had been excellent throughout. At the final whistle there was another melee on the pitch. Having put up a spirited performance Flackwell let themselves down badly at the end. Instead of being applauded off, the crowd drifted away leaving the players to their own personal vendettas. Shame, as it would have been nice to applaud them off. I left.

  • I see that Dayle Grubb played for Weston-super-Mare tonight. I remember him scoring for FGR in a League Cup tie at Adams Park three years ago, which we won on penalties.

  • Grubb was originally signed by FGR from W-s-M before going back to them now.
