The Papa John’s Trophy

Another reason to fight to stay in The Championship.

As a lukewarm, stale and unhealthy competition, it’s a pretty appropriate sponsor.

  • Would be a suitably tacky follow-up to the Milk Cup for Oxford to win.

  • This is horrible.

  • Colour me competely uninterested.

  • Not exactly a good advert with the football clubs are trying to set up FFIT sessions!

Better than another betting company though.

  • Football Fans In Training - @AlanCecil, @Jocks_little_helper and all that, isn’t it?

  • Next it will be the Viagra Vase!

  • Mine’s nearly empty.

  • Have a word with your GP then @micra.

  • She probably wouldn’t play ball.

I've never liked pizza - whoever makes them!

Racists > Legal gambling companies? Right...

  • Oh @JohnBoy, haven't enough thread disappeared down a rabbit hole recently?

Papa John himself is no longer involved in the company. Papa John's sell pizzas, not worldviews. Betting companies are built on increasing and perpetuating people's misery.

  • What about the National Lottery, particularly their scratch cards @floyd? Does the fact that some people benefit outweigh other peoples misery?

  • That’s an interesting question @mooneyman. Are Bet365 or SkyBet involved in projects that benefit other people?

  • I never knew Papa John was a real person. Pleased to hear he is an actual papa too. Authentic.

  • Does this mean that Holmer Green Pizza will be banned from advertising at AP? Loved seeing their ad flashing up on Sky last night and imagining members of the worldwide phenomenon planning post Covid pilgrimages to the village, scoffing a slice or two by the duck pond. ?

Obviously they only benefit shareholders. You clearly view gambling as a vice which leads to vulnerable people being harmed mentally and financially. I do not agree totally, but I do think it is essential that the Government put more controls on betting companies AND reintroduce the old betting tax.

What I was trying to elucidate from you was your view on the National Lottery. I know someone who was/is in severe financial trouble due to playing the lottery and buying their scratch cards.

Sorry if this sounds like a Dev debate!

  • I don't really have a view on it to be honest. There are better ways to provide community benefits i'd have thought.

Don’t know about 365, but plenty of betting companies are.

  • That's just CSR though, little more than greenwashing.

  • Are there any companies able to afford to sponsor a team or competition that aren't either owned by someone unscrupulous or tax-dodging or doing something unpleasant to someone or something?

  • Good point @Wendoverman. Must be some ethical companies out there surely?

  • Surely Papa Johns is a big step up from the previous sponsors, the likes of LDV Vans, Checkatrade and Auto windscreens?
Those just stank of small time. This actually sounds a step up in name

  • I miss Zenith Data systems....

  • AC Delco cup always sounded like it might have a bit of European glamour. Can’t remember exactly what it was - some sort of Conference league cup? And was the Bob Lord Trophy sponsored by a company called Bob Lord (Issac Lord offshoot perhaps?) or was Bob Lord the British Papa John of his day, except with chip shops?

  • The AC Delco was formerly the Hitachi Cup which was the Isthmian lge cup .
Bob Lord was the controversial ex Burnley Chairman and Alliance premier league. If you not well versed of Mr Lord, you may want to google the ex 'Butcher boy' as he was and arguably still is an important part of footballing policies.

Ecotricity, Grundon, Quorn and Sea Shepherd are all sponsors or commercial partners of Forest Green.

  • Not sure Quorn is necessarily healthy. It is banned in Canada, is a highly processed food and causes serious allergic reactions to some people.
