A Points per Game Table -

I know that there are more important things than football, and I do hope that we are able to finish the season.

However, if this does not prove possible and football is possible in the autumn, I can see an argument for promotion to the Championship being decided on the basis of the highest three teams on a points per games played basis -

  • Just in the nick of time for pretty much the first time all season we've had games in hand on teams!

  • To be honest, if the season is unable to be completed, which I think is highly likely, this may well be the fairest solution. I can't see trying to squeeze the end of this season into the start of next season is in anyway realistic. Voiding the season could open up a whole can of worms with regards sponsorship and finances.

At the moment (and I'm actually not that keen on us getting promoted under such circumstances) I'm really struggling to think of a more feasible option?

  • I should add, that sadly I think (even if there is some way the season can be completed) that the FA Cup will have to be void, along with all other cup competitions.

  • Awarding anything based on current positions would be the biggest issue. Voiding would be easier to do than that.

But all the lost money is going to be the biggest issue in a football sense.

Will expect the government to ban meetings above a certain level this week, probably what they should have done Friday, before pro football in effect forced things along.

  • I'd imagine those who benefit from any solution will be happy and those who don't will sue.

Tranmere would sue with a points per game ending.

I though got this why we have invented xG?

  • If any of the cup competitions end up void this season, what happens to the prize money already accrued (and presumably paid out)?

  • All money will be trousered by the FA bigwigs!

I too had spare time and created the same - then I extended it to look at the teams played and their relative positions to create an Opposition Index, based on relative positions of teams played to date and whether home or away.

Above is based on 40:60 weighting for home/away difficulty. At 50:50 we only move to 5th.
Also based on form positions, ignoring the 12pt Bolton deduction - if you factor that in then even on 40:60 weighting we only go up to 6th because of the swap in position on Bolton and Southend.

Only conclusion is that the adjusted table, if one is ever used, will be that there will be big arguments about the formula. Now where can we find Messrs Duckworth and Lewis?

And also how can I post tables so they display in columns!!!

  • Appreciate the effort nonetheless, @carrickblue!

  • Bloody hell @carrickblue. If you’ve got that much time on your hands (and skill) stop pissing around with football tables and get working on a vaccine!

  • @carrickblue - Lovely work, even if it produces the 'wrong' answer.

For tables I use Markdown: https://www.tablesgenerator.com/markdown_tables#

You can copy and paste into a post

  • @ReadingMarginalista @railwaysteve

Thanks. Will use that in future.

  • Oh and the “bad news”. I had inverted the home/away ratios. We have played more home games than many others so using my formula we’d only end up 6th.

But I’m sure there’s real mathematicians who if needed would create a real formula for the EFL so who knows what would be the final answer.

  • In the NHS we’re reducing unnecessary face to face contact as much as possible with online appointments and so on where appropriate. So applying this approach, the answer is surely for each manager to play all remaining games on FIFA 20 with matches on IFollow and Sky. I’d lay good money on Gaz being a bit handy with a D-pad.
