Sunderland away by train

The motorway networks are crap and now the rail service is going the same way. Last season many WW fans travelled on the Grand Central service from Kings Cross to Sunderland - coming back on the 17.29 from Sunderland after the game.

Although this service is in the timetable it won’t be running on Saturday Jan 11th due to engineering works. The last train from Sunderland to Kings Cross is the 12.31.

In order to get back by train, the only way to do it is via the Metro to Newcastle then LNER to Kings Cross. However, the cheapest single ticket I can find for this journey is £140.

So it looks like driving, going by coach or staying the weekend is the best option. Maybe some people with railway connections can offer a better alternative but getting there by train (or at least getting back) doesn’t look as though it’s going to be easy or economic.

  • Vote for Corbyn. he'll nationalise the railways and instantly fares will drop to two groats and a farthing and rosy cheeked fat porters will happily shine your shoes as you leave the train in a utopian socialist nirvana.
Or Vote for Johnson. He'll leave the railways in private hands but he'll slash corporation tax and hence fares will drop to one groat and two farthings plus he'll cut your income tax (but only of course if you pay at higher rate) and get rid of those nasty foreigners to free up seats in a utopian capitalist Jerusalem.

oh no I forgot. The election will be over by then. Whichever lying bastard gets in, all those promises will be quietly forgotten. Fuck em all.

  • Cheapest return BA flight from Heathrow is £107 atm, up Saturday morning and back Sunday evening so taking an overnight into consideration it's a similar cost. Hobson's choice. However, a result up there would probably seem worth twice the cost!

  • Another option is to drive to somewhere like Birmingham and then train it from there. Slashes the fare in half.

But adds near on 200 miles of fuel cost and potentially parking. In truth, early booking is the cheapest route to controlling away costs unless one can car share. Always a risk of loss of the fare if the match is moved/postponed though.

  • It's a bloody mad trip however you look at it, potentially in the worst weather period of the year too.

My mate is doing some insane megabus, that takes about 47 hours but costs about 2 feathers :)

The only way I could imagine doing the trip would be at least 1 stay over. Maybe seeing if there's some other game in the weekend that works in too.

  • I'm already booked in for the weekend so I'm expecting Sky to move it to the sunday at any moment

  • Just checked, paid £140 last year, might give it a miss this year.

  • Well, at least if it's on Sky, we might get those new players, Akinfenway, Jackobsen and Gummer in the team again.

While we still have Sky sports me too!

That's one heck of a train bill.

Wonder what the petrol cost would be. Has to be a full tank job at least

Either way Sunderland on the train is a good few hours lech, for a west country weirdo...

    Go by plane!

  • Or the OWWSA coach - probably around £40 for the return trip, or a bit less than that for members.

  • Nope. All looks good for me. Much later train as well... (Benefits of living up t’North #74)

  • Off topic but Sunderland dumped out of the FA Cup tonight. They are having a nightmare season so far

And the fan reaction is HILARIOUS.

  • They are too big for the FA Cup 2nd round anyway. They should only be asked to play finals in gold-plated stadiums.

When has Corbyn lied about anything?

  • Is it OK to call someone rosy cheeked and fat?

  • Only babies

  • I'm sure I read a thread on Sunderland's forum with a lot saying they "wanted" to be out of the cup.
    Well they got their wish!!

I’m sure he’s claimed he was going to provide credible left wing opposition.

That's one of his "problems" with the press /public. They don't want or have the attention span for nuanced or considered answers, and he won't just lie and give a yes or a no when the actual answer is somewhere in between.

  • @Username indeed but all the deliberation (worthy or not) is fallen on by the press keen for an entertaining Bozzer premiership...laughing amongst the ruins. Biggest example for me was the perennial LAbour/CND/Commie/Coward question never asked of the Tories 'Would he press the button?' question (which is by the way pretty academic and they obviously assume Bojo or Jacob would press it without a second thought!) if he or Emily Thornbird had just said 'If all other options had been exhausted and the safety of the nation was in question...Yes!' Cue Nick Robinsin embarrassed cough and sound of notes being rustled in panic. Rather than two minutes of him 'demanding an answer'!

Corbyn will ensure more trains, running on time, and secure a 3-0 victory. Boris will tackle a ball boy.

I blame DJ for hijacking it ;)

  • I tend to use Megabus or National Express or Megabus now to beat the disgusting scam train fares.

Have yourself a night in Newcastle and get the overnight coach is a possibility. If I go, it'll be via the Indies as I have work on Sunday
