Local FA Cup action on Sunday

Local if you are from North Bucks that is.

In the Extra Preliminary Round, Winslow United, from the Spartan South Midlands Division 1, host Roman Glass St George, of the Western League Premier Division. Step 6 v step 5.

Kick-off is 2pm at Elmfields Gate, Winslow MK18 3JG. Admission £6, £3 concs. Bar opens at 1pm, free car park opposite, if that fills up try the free one in Greyhound Lane, 5 minutes walk away.

The Ploughmen cannot play any home games on a Saturday in the cricket season, as both codes share the clubhouse.

The Glass claim to be the oldest club in Bristol. Strictly speaking they were formed in 1995, out of the merger of St George (est. 1872) and Roman Glass (est. 1960 as Wyndham Wanderers)

Last season Winslow played a Friday night EPR game and attracted a gate of over 300, huge for them. Another big crowd is expected. The winners will travel to Didcot Town in the next round.

  • Thanks, Steve. By the by, does a League team get anything for losing in the first round?...

  • No @HCblue, only in EPR and PR.

  • Actually I copied last season's prize fund, silly me. This season, all losers get something before the First Round.

  • I've just seen Winslow beat MK Robins (formerly Buckingham Utd) 8-0 at home in the Spartan South Mids One, in front of about 100. Very impressive pace, movement and, above all, finishing, especially for this level. Some videos here:

Winslow have scored 13 goals in their opening two league games, sets up the FA Cup game on Sunday very nicely.

  • That's a cracking free kick in the first of those @Steve_Peart, do you know if it's the same taker in the second?

  • @drcongo, Shayne Almond scored both, second and third ones of the night. The first goal, after 2 minutes, was scored by Winslow keeper Sam Ashmead, long free kick just outside his area, Robins keeper messed up, misjudged the bounce. I wish I had filmed that one.

Winslow appointed manager George Tomlin a few weeks ago. He is only 24, not a player, and led Aylesbury Flooring to the FA Sunday Cup win last season. In fact they won all five competitions they entered. I think many of those players have come with him.

  • Thanks. If he knocks in free kicks like that every week he'd be worth having in a lot of league teams.

  • FT Winslow Utd 2-3 Roman Glass St George.

Plenty of drama, a stop/start first half, tackles were flying in from the start. Winslow took the lead on 15 with a penalty after a trip, scored by Ryan Freshwater, son of Graham who played a few reserve games for us. Glass equalised on 45+9, floating the ball over the keeper.

The Winslow keeper, Sam Ashmead, had taken a heavy knock to the head in the opening minutes, after an age carried on, but went down again for another long period of treatment. He made two great saves before having to come off in the second half. The new concussion rules did not seem to apply today! By then Glass had taken the lead with a penalty, but after much pressure, including a free kick clipping the crossbar, Winslow equalised with about 10 to go. Glass scored the winner in the last minute, an unstoppable volley high over the stand-in keeper, who minutes before had made a miraculous point-blank save.

It was apparently Glass's first victory in the FA Cup for 66 years, presumably as St George. They are a big, strong team who defended well, a little fortunate to get the win. Winslow had more of the play and will regret not taking chances to make it 2-0. About 200 there, perhaps less than expected.

    The Winslow goals here:

  • Flackwell Heath progressed in the FA Cup thanks to a 4-0 win at Oxhey Jets. Holmer Green drew 1-1 at Shrivenham & face a replay at home on the same night as Wycombe play Reading. That’ll help their attendance. Not.

Speaking of which there’s a good local derby in the Southern League Premier Division South this week: Beaconsfield Town v Chesham United. Should be Beaconsfield’s best league gate of the season. But hey, guess what, it’s on the same night as Wycombe v Reading. Bizarre. Then these clubs complain about finance.

I wonder how many Wycombe fans would go to Beaconsfield if there wasn't a clash though?

Are we talking a handful? Or do you think there's an appetite for 100s to do so?

  • I’ve been to matches at Beaconsfield where there have been at least 50 WWFC supporters there when Wycombe weren’t playing. That would bring in another £500 in income. Judging by Tuesday’s attendance that would have added 20-25% to the crowd. The classic case was a couple of years ago when Flackwell Heath hosted Burnham in the FA Cup on a Friday night early in the season. Their usual gate of 70-80 was swelled to over 300 - almost exclusively by WW supporters & a few Slough fans.

  • The clubs dont dictate the fixture list !!!!

I took my family to the Flackwell v Burnham tie, a much stronger Heatherbs side beat a youthful Burnham side.
Interesting to note that Flackwells manager Paul Shone who is now Burnhams manager.
