  • League Two clubs meeting this afternoon - what happens if they vote to end the season? Are we really going to have different outcomes in Leagues One and Two? It's a total farce, with the EFL currently letting the richest clubs railroad their agendas through at the expense of others.

  • At that point can the EFL step in and say enough is enough?

So the Peterborough chairman has just said ‘if teams can’t afford to come back, they can just forfeit their games’ - wow! What a selfish attitude.

A bit like they did forfeit their lead at AP against 10 men you mean??

So another week without a decision makes the end of the season more likely.

Or just another week in the wait until it's safe to do so. It's not really possible to give a definate start date today but it is possible to just wait and see.

  • You’d have thought that if that gets confirmed league one would follow suit.

Who would miss out on a play off place in league one under that system? Darragh MacAnthony

They'd get in. 3rd to 6th would be Oxford, Fleetwood, Posh, us.

    My mistake, you’re right.

You’d have got good odds on Pompey, Sunderland and Ipswich not making the top six wouldn’t you.

  • Makes you realise just how much catching up Pompey and Sunderland left themselves with and how badly Ipswich bottled it.

  • Confirmed. League Two season is over, League One set to reconvene on Monday.

"Peterborough Chairman Insists Poor Clubs Forfeit Games, In The Name Of Sporting Integrity"

Today, Darragh MacAnthony took a stand for the League One season being completed, saying the division should be decided on the pitch, not by computer or PPG. He clarified he was referring to clubs who could continue to play. With Peterborough set to embark on a run of games against poorer clubs, he noted that those games did not need to be decided on the pitch, but would gain more integrity by the poorer clubs handing the points over to Peterborough with a nice bow on top.

  • Who was it who said their pal at Oxford who knew their board told us to start making championship plans?

That looks like mere guesswork from the "contact" then and the smart money back on the playoffs

  • That reporter is the same guy that pushed the weighted ppg solution before.

Heard 3 other reports from the meeting already saying that the "how" it's sorted wasn't decided, none mentioned anything about weighted ppg

A play off solution if safe is reasonable to me

  • League Two have set a precedent for weighted PPG now, so I think its curtains for us.

Weighted PPG has us 6th, so if behind closed doors play offs are the intention then it's certainly not curtains.

  • League Two have set a precedent but can't force the other divisions to follow suit - but there does need to be a consensus.

This is potentially a problem as the National League want to run their play-offs and therefore presumably promote two. Barrow could come up and take Bury's place, but could there really be a 25-team L2 next season?

  • No decision has been made on how the league standings are to be decided full stop, even less that they're using weighted ppg

  • If that is the rumour though, we should immediately be emailing an independent statistician to get a "review" of the weighted ppg system ready for the next meeting

  • Could you briefly explain why you feel WPPG is less valid than PPG from a statistical theory point of view @username

Only curtains if they're going with three auto promotions.
But any talk of that seems to have dropped off.

So the big question is whether it's Portsmouth or Peterborough.
Though you never know when money talks. Could they somehow squeeze us out?

Both PPG options have us in the playoffs if they are having playoffs.

To go with all the other posts that have explained it to you? Are you starting a collection?

My point exactly! I was reassuring @OxfordBlue that it would be by no means curtains.

  • From a WWFC view it would be better to be positioned 3rd than 6th in the table just in case the planned playoffs had to be cancelled.

No relegation but wanting promotion is a very dangerous precident towards a closed top flight in the future.

Plus it makes my blood boil that Bolton might get away with all their cheating

Without any relegation above and below third place is not a certainty to go up in a non play off scenario.

  • Sunderland's finances are discussed in the most recent podcast edition of The Price of Football with Prof. Kieran Maguire (Brighton fan) of Liverpool University and Kevin Day (Palace fan), the podcast is thoroughly recommended as is Kieran's book - also called The Price of Football.

The BBC clip of Chair Bodgers shown yesterday on the fb page is riveting viewing too.

  • How have league two voted so decisively on no relegation?
    Real let off for Stevenage

It's considering only 1 element of surface level complexity which can give false predictions /relationships

Looking at the league standings there are two parameters which are fixed and not debatable: how many points a team has gained, and how many games they had the chance to accumulate those points.

Standard ppg is solely assessing what has occurred, and ignores all other factors

There are infinite other factors which can be argued have an effect on the actual "value" of the points gained so far, and it is unreasonable to say that you have to consider literally everything or nothing.
It is reasonable to only consider some of these factors if you can reasonably (statistically) prove that their effect is negligible compared to the factors which you are using for weighting.

In the case of the league, is it reasonable to say that the effect of playing at home or away is so large that it makes who you are meant to be playing negligible? (Opponent being the most obvious but not only factor that could be used as an example).

There's also the effect of who's you've already played affecting your "predicted" points home or away, and the fact it's a prediction rather than an analysis of what's happened too...
