  • I have checked league rules and find to my surprise that actually there is no "droit de signeur" rule giving league club first refusal over local non league talent. Apparently they can work where they want.

Perhaps Barnet could afford to offer Maidenhead or tarpey a better deal.

Or maybe Ainsworth had never heard of him, didn't fancy him or was too busy last night talking to Northamptons chairman.

Or maybe Tarpey has reason to live in north London.

    Which reason feels most credible?

  • @Cecil His other issue was staying fairly local.

  • Or maybe he could only afford to play league football for one season so he chose Barnet

This "can earn more working a proper job" myth seems to have developed into a definite truth.

Good to see it smashed by a fairly lowly league 2 club!

  • What a miss that is. We could have put him at centre- back instead of the dominant and speedy El-Abd (captain marvel).

So that was what we spent Tarps wages on, dear oh dear got to question our scouting structure.

  • Is it time for a 'Let's keep whining on about Dave Tarpey' sticky thread?

  • Lord save us if he scores a hatrick on Saturday.

  • Maybe Dave Tarpey did his research on Wycombe Wanderers and discovered that we have some of the most ignorant and intolerant supporters in the local area.

The sort of people who will call him 'a useless c***' on twitter if he went three games without scoring, or get in his face at Tesco when he's getting some cash out before running to the club like a snivelling grass.

Perhaps he thought Barnet was a better place to be, for lots of reasons other than Gareth Ainsworth and the club being useless / unambitious / deceitful / clueless etc etc.

Good luck to him. He's probably better off out of this vipers nest.

  • Refererences to scouting are surely totally irrelevant. Even my 85 year old mentally faltering neighbour knows about Tarpey. He's legend in these parts.

Never mind tomorrow; I'll be even more upset if he scores a hat-trick (or at all!) four weeks tomorrow.

Yes of course we're unique in having moaners online, get over yourself.

  • Lol.... that's actually a fair point @arnos_grove !!

Yes, but maybe ours are worse. We're certainly unique in having supporters trying to pick fights with their own players before crying like pussies to the club.

And in summary. Go fuck yourself.

  • We're unique in having had a player get out the car and rise to it yes.

No way we're any worse than most teams, some people, particularly on here, like to make out we are to suit their agenda.

  • This is all turning a bit Facebook. Not keen.

  • This has always been an entirely pointless thread even by Gasroom standards (which is of course why I like it so much!). I rather like @DevC's first sentence above, which does seem to sum up a lot of the views expressed on here.

The only rationale there seems to be is that he seems a good player who lives locally and therefore would obviously want to choose to play for us. There may have been some logic in this about 50 years ago, but none at all these days. And do we know how close to Maidenhead he actually lives anyway? For all I know he could already live in North London.

I also doubt that we will ever know whether we ever did look at him seriously. My personal thoughts would be that probably like an awful lot of clubs we would have checked him out, but I can't really see (admittedly mainly only on youtube evidence and from assorted testimony on here) that he is the sort of player who would ever want to be Wycombised and I can't imagine that GA ever saw him at the sort of player who would fit in either.

I expect he will actually do rather well at Barnet (and I'm off to put my tenner on him scoring a hat-trick against us in a month's time shortly) but equally I expect that he would have struggled if he had come to us currently. I think he is probably the sort of player who would have shone under Gorman, but would despair at being a workhorse in our side (which seems to be an essential these days - not complaining, just how it is at the moment).

  • My vote is 'Barnet offered more money' but I'm cynical like that. As for Facebook calling people out at Tesco, we only heard one side of the story, some of the language used since makes me wonder what could have been said that made AP stop and get out of his car...

  • edited September 2017

    @Wendoverman The language used was confirmed by Mr Stokes at the time;

"...he got out of his car and I said "I'm sorry to say Aaron, but I felt your performance this afternoon fell somewhat below your usual high standards...then the ****ing *** ****ing nutted me."

  • @Jonny_King ah yes...I remember it now. Cheers

    What language since?

  • @Jonny_King that doesn't explain why AP stopped i suggest it was more than Mr Stokes demurely waving his hanky in the general direction of his car.

  • @Username would have thought you were up with this debate. ****ing gypsy **** directed at GA from our 'fans' at Vale. gyppo directed at GA on Twitter. And if it's a separate issue...whatever the ST holder who got suspended for comments on social media said on social media. First two at least came from the 'true fans' involved in the chat with AP...so if they call Gareth a gyppo there's chance it was not 'what ho Aaron...' isn;t there?

  • @Morris_Ital I believe Stokes admitted on here that he waved a middle finger at AP.

I must say I'm surprised that such a gesture would be enough to make Aaron pull over and confront his vicious attacker. Either AP was feeling particularly grumpy that day, or more went on than Mr Stokes cared to reveal. Given the rather disingenuous-sounding version of events Stokes posted on here, I wouldn't mind betting the latter, but I guess only the two people involved will ever know the full details of the sorry incident.

Perhaps the scouting comment related to El Abd?

  • The actual mystery with the "incident", is not the language used, or why Pierre stopped.

But instead how on earth such a powerful machine like Pierre only managed to leave a miniscule mark on the chap's face.
Any sort of force and he'd have been destroyed.

If that's what you intended, I apologise but it wasn't crystal clear. I do wonder if A E-A was subjected to due diligence..

  • @Jonny_King Thanks for the info. I wonder if the club paid for the cleaning of Mr Stokes' undercrackers as a result of the car pulling up.

  • @Morris_Ital I understand they were beyond repair and had to be incinerated.

That's a big leap, suggesting that AP was racially abused rather just generally abused.

There's a huge difference in how the word gypo is viewed /used compared to what your suggesting.

  • To be fair, didn't they bravely boo him home and away to his face (from in amongst the crowd) for his last few games?
